Sometimes, what begins as a frustrating moment turns into a beautiful reminder of how much kindness still exists in the world.
I have a flat tire.
At first, it is just low. I put air in it and start driving — and as soon as I am moving, I can hear the air coming out. I know I cannot keep going, so I pull into a parking lot.
A very nice man has his office right where I stop. He comes out to help us, and he tries to change the tire himself. That is when we discover that a screwdriver is missing from the tool kit that comes with my car. I will have to let the dealer know it was missing.
But he does not stop there.
He calls someone to come and change the tire for us. He even offers to pay for it. And he invites my daughter and me into his office, so we can wait comfortably while everything is taken care of.
Inside, the stressful afternoon slows down. We have a really nice conversation about life. He is from Jamaica, he has a lovely accent, and he carries himself with such politeness and education. He takes the time to talk with my daughter, too — about her future, about sports, about life in general — and he gives her advice the way you give it when you truly want good things for someone.
When he offers to pay, he tells me I don’t need to pay him back, because it will multiply back to him.
That stays with me.
It reminds me of something my husband used to say: “What goes around comes around.”
Different words. The same heart.
What we give to others — the kindness we offer, the way we show up when someone needs us — becomes part of something bigger than that one moment. It does not always come back from the same person, in the same way, or at the time we expect. But when we choose to do good, we keep goodness moving in this world.
There is something beautiful in a man who helps someone he has never met, without expecting anything in return. He doesn’t hold on so tightly to what he has. He gives freely, he helps where he is, and he trusts God with the rest.
And I don’t want to overlook my part in this: I accept his help.
I am so used to taking care of everything myself. Solving my own problems, handling my own responsibilities, keeping everything moving. Accepting help can feel unfamiliar. But life reminds me that I am not meant to do everything alone.
There is kindness in offering help. There is humility in receiving it. When I allow someone to do something good for me, I also give them the chance to share a little of themselves.
One person helps another. That person is inspired to help someone else. One act of kindness becomes many more. That is how it multiplies — not always back to us, but forward, from life to life. We may never see how far it travels. That doesn’t mean it stops.
Maybe the blessing isn’t only that someone shows up when I need help — it’s that I allow myself to receive it, and let the kindness keep moving through me to somebody else.
Have you ever had an unexpected situation that led you to meet someone who restored your faith in the kindness of people? Looking back, did what seemed like an inconvenience turn out to be a blessing you didn’t know you needed?
