Wave 46: The Currents We Inherit
This week reminded me that not every storm I face started in my own ocean.

After an emotional conversation with my mother, I found myself asking questions that went far beyond that moment. I wasn’t just thinking about our relationship. I was thinking about everything we carry without even realizing it.

Sometimes I catch myself reacting in ways I don’t like. Sometimes I raise my voice after repeating the same thing over and over. Sometimes I carry responsibilities that were never supposed to belong to me. And afterward, I wonder…

Where did this come from?

As I sat with that question, I realized that we inherit much more than our parents’ eyes, smile, or last name.

We inherit fears.

We inherit silence.

We inherit ways of loving.

We inherit ways of protecting ourselves.

Sometimes we even inherit roles that were never ours to carry.

As children, we learn by watching. We absorb what is modeled long before anyone explains it. We learn how to handle conflict, how to express love, how to ask for help, and sometimes… how to hide our pain.

Years later, we call it our personality, when in reality, some of it may simply be the current we’ve been swimming in all along.

The beautiful part is that awareness changes everything.

The moment we recognize a current, we no longer have to let it decide where we’re going.

we can’t change everything that shaped us.

We can’t rewrite the past.

But we can choose which currents we continue…

…and which ones end with us.

Perhaphs, that’s one of the greatest gifts we can leave the next generation.

Not perfection.

Not a life without mistakes.

But the courage to notice what we’ve inherited, keep what brings life, and gently let go of what no longer belongs in our journey.

Because healing isn’t about becoming someone completely different.

It’s about becoming the first person in the family to change the direction of the current.

Maybe Wave 46 is about realizing that we don’t choose the currents we are born into, but we do choose which ones we continue to follow.

What currents have you inherited? Which ones have helped you become who you are… and which ones are asking to end with you?

Wave 45: When Emotions Take the Wheel
Sometimes life doesn’t teach us through our own experiences.

Sometimes it teaches us through someone else’s.

A few days ago, I witnessed a moment that reminded me how quickly emotions can take over.

A mother and her adult daughter were arguing. At first, it sounded like a family disagreement—two people trying to be heard, trying to make a point. But the tension grew, anger took over, the police were called, and the daughter spent the night in jail.

It all happened in a matter of moments.

But I couldn’t stop wondering…

Did it really begin in those moments?

Or had it been building long before that?

What everyone witnessed wasn’t necessarily the beginning.

It was simply the first moment everyone else could see.

That thought stayed with me.

It made me wonder what happens when emotions take control of our reason.

Not just through our words.

But through our actions.

Our reactions.

Our expressions.

Through every part of us.

We all carry things that no one else can see.

Stress, Grief, Disappointment.

Fear, Frustration, Guilt.

Loneliness.

Most of the time, we keep moving forward. We tell ourselves we’ll deal with it later. We convince ourselves that if we ignore it long enough, it will somehow disappear.

But emotions don’t disappear.

They settle quietly inside us, One disappointment at a time.

One hurt at a time. One unanswered question at a time.

Until one day, they no longer fit.

Sometimes they come out as words we never meant to say.

Sometimes as decisions we never imagined we would make.

Sometimes in a single moment that changes everything.

Nobody wakes up in the morning planning to lose control.

That’s what makes those moments so heartbreaking.

The explosion isn’t where the story begins.

It’s simply where everyone else finally notices the storm that has been building inside.

Emotional strength isn’t about never feeling anger.

It’s about recognizing the storm while it’s still only a wave.

About speaking before we explode.

Crying before we harden.

Asking for help before silence becomes resentment…

And resentment becomes anger.

Because once emotions take the wheel, reason often struggles to catch up.

The strongest thing we can do isn’t to carry everything alone.

It’s learning to let a few waves reach the shore before they become a tsunami.

Maybe Wave 46 is about the quiet storms we carry—and why the strongest waves are often the ones no one else can see.

Have you ever realized that what others saw as an overreaction had actually been building inside you for much longer?

What about you? What helps you release those emotions before they become too heavy to carry?

Wave 44: What the Current Reveals
Meeting new people is an interesting thing.

At first, we think we’re simply getting to know another person.

But if we pay attention, we may discover something even more meaningful.

We begin to notice ourselves.

Not in the big moments.

But in the little ones.

A conversation.

A gesture.

A decision.

Even in silence.

Some arrive gently, almost imperceptible.

Others come with enough strength to leave a mark.

Over time, we begin to recognize the different currents.

The ones that create tension.

The ones that feel natural.

The ones that align with who we are.

And the ones we keep trying to force ourselves to swim against.

Life has a quiet way of refining us, like the waves meeting the shore.

Over time, the waves shape the coastline without asking permission.

People do the same.

Every person who enters our lives leaves something behind.

We learn about them, but most importantly, we learn about ourselves.

What once felt small becomes clearer in hindsight.

A conversation.

A silence.

A reaction.

They begin to reveal patterns we couldn’t see before.

We start to understand the difference between what flows…

and what we constantly have to hold in place.

Not everything that enters our lives is meant to stay aligned with us.

Some people move with us like the current.

Others ask us to become someone we are not.

When we’re younger, we often believe that if enough things feel right, we can overlook the ones that don’t.

We adapt.

We justify.

We hope that, somehow, the pieces will eventually fit.

But life has a way of teaching us that alignment isn’t something we create by forcing it.

It’s something we recognize.

Not only in the people we love, but in the friendships we choose, the conversations we have, the places where we feel at home, and the energy we welcome into our lives.

Perhaps that awareness isn’t simply becoming more selective.

It’s becoming more honest.

Honest about what helps us grow.

What gives us peace.

What brings out the best in us.

And honest enough to let go of what we no longer need to carry simply because we’ve carried it for so long.

If something doesn’t align with our values, our peace, or the person we’re becoming, it’s okay to let it go.

Maybe Wave 44 isn’t just about meeting new people.

Maybe it’s about discovering, through every connection, what the current reveals about the person you’re becoming.

What about you?

Are you connecting with the people who align with you…

Or are you adjusting yourself to align with them?

Wave 43: The Crazy Birds
Every morning, when I walk my dog, I slow down.

I look at the trees, the flowers, the way the morning wakes up before the rest of the world does. Sometimes I even take off my shoes and walk barefoot on the grass. It’s my way of grounding myself before the day begins.

But lately, my peaceful walk has come with an unexpected challenge.

There is a pair of birds that have claimed the trees near the pool as their territory.

One sits high in the tallest tree, watching every move. The other waits in a lower tree, almost as if they’re working together. The moment you get too close, they dive straight at you.

Not once. Every single time.

They’ve chased my daughter. They’ve chased me. More than once I’ve had to duck to avoid getting hit. If you didn’t know better, you’d think they were just… crazy.

But are they?

Or are they simply protecting what matters most?

Somewhere among those branches, there could be a nest. Perhaps there are eggs, or tiny birds depending on two parents willing to risk everything to keep them safe.

From a distance, their behavior looks aggressive.

From their perspective, it’s love.

It made me smile because I realized…

I’m one of the crazy birds too.

When it comes to my daughter, my mother, my home, my values, or the people I love, something inside me changes. I’ll stand my ground. I’ll protect what matters. I may not have wings, but I understand that instinct completely.

Sometimes what looks like overreacting is simply love standing guard.

Maybe Wave 42 is about realizing that we all become a little like those crazy birds when love gives us something worth protecting. Love isn’t always quiet. Sometimes it has wings, a loud voice, and it isn’t afraid to chase away anything that gets too close.

And maybe we never really understand someone’s reaction until we stop seeing what they do… and start seeing what they might lose.

Are you one of the crazy birds too?

Wave 42: When the System Crashes
This morning, my computer gave me a warning message, and I immediately went into panic mode.

What did I do?

Did I break something?

Who do I call?

Am I going to get in trouble?

My mind started racing before I even understood what was happening. I forgot to think. I forgot to breathe. I forgot that there were people whose job it is to help when systems fail.

After the panic settled, I started thinking about life.

Life is also a system.

We are all connected to a larger network. There are strong signals and weak signals. Good connections and bad connections. Updates we need to install. Programs that help us grow. And sometimes, unexpected crashes that leave us staring at a screen, wondering what happened.

What do you do when your internal system crashes?

– When your emotions are running low and you don’t know how to reach for help.

When you’re sick, overwhelmed, exhausted, or carrying more than you can manage alone.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t solving the problem. It’s remembering that help exists.

When pride keeps you from asking for support.

When fear convinces you that you should already know the answer.

In the middle of panic, we forget about the help desk.

The help desk might be a friend.

A family member, a church, a therapist.

A prayer.

A conversation with yourself that reminds you to slow down and think clearly.

Maybe Wave 42 is about remembering that even the strongest systems need support. Crashes happen. Errors happen. Moments of confusion happen. The important thing is knowing that you don’t have to fix everything alone.

Sometimes the first step is simply reaching out and saying, “I need help.”

Wave 41: The Strength of Being Vulnerable
This morning during a book study, we were talking about vulnerability.

As the conversation unfolded, I found myself reflecting on how often we try to be the strong one. The one who keeps everything together. The one others depend on. The one who carries the responsibilities, solves the problems, and somehow keeps moving forward.

For a long time, I believed that being strong meant carrying everything on my own.

The house, the job, the finances, the relationships, The endless responsibilities that come with everyday life.

Somehow along the way, I convinced myself that this was what strength looked like.

And I know I’m not alone.

Many of us learn that showing weakness is dangerous. We worry that if people see us struggling, they might think less of us.

We fear that admitting we’re tired will make us appear incapable. Or that the image we’ve worked so hard to maintain will begin to crack.

So we carry more…

And when things become heavy, we carry even more.

But this morning, I realized something.

What if vulnerability is not the weakness we’ve always believed it to be?Perhaps it is courage hidden beneath fear.

When we finally speak about what is weighing on us, we take it out of the shadows and place it where we can actually see it. Whether it’s through a conversation with a friend, a partner, a trusted mentor, prayer, meditation, or simply sitting quietly with ourselves, something begins to shift.

The situation may not change immediately, but our perspective often does.

Sometimes what we discover is that we’re not tired of what we’re doing.

We’re tired of carrying it alone.

There’s a difference.

When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we create space for support, understanding, compassion, and even solutions we couldn’t see before.

We were never meant to carry every burden by ourselves.

Vulnerability also has a way of leading us back to gratitude.

When we stop long enough to acknowledge what we’re feeling and share what we’re carrying, we often begin to see things differently. We notice the people who have been standing beside us. We recognize the love hidden within the responsibilities we sometimes resent. We see lessons where we once saw only struggles.

The burden may still be there, but gratitude helps us carry it with a lighter heart.

It reminds us of what we have, who we have, and how far we’ve already come. It helps us appreciate the support, the growth, and even the challenges that have shaped us into who we are today.

We all have crosses to bear; Some are small. Some are heavy. Some we talk about openly…

Others remain hidden behind a smile and the words, “I’m fine.”

Being vulnerable doesn’t give power to our struggles. It takes away the power they have over us.

Maybe Wave 41 is about understanding that vulnerability gives us back our power. The strength to be ourselves, with the support of the ones we love.

Wave 40: Every Wave Has a Sound
The Music Between Waves

“Music doesn’t change who we are. Sometimes it simply helps us find the rhythm of who we already are.”

Today, I found myself staring at a project I wanted to finish, yet hours had passed and very little had been done. The tools were there. The intention was there. The time was there.

What was missing?

As I sat reflecting, I realized I wasn’t thinking about the project anymore. I was thinking about music.

Music has always been more than background noise. It has the power to calm, inspire, energize, and sometimes even transport us somewhere we didn’t expect to go.

A song can bring back a memory you haven’t visited in years. A rhythm can make you want to move. A melody can quiet the noise in your mind.

It made me wonder: do we choose music based on how we feel, or does music help shape how we feel?

When we’re sad, do we reach for songs that understand our sadness? Or do we search for something uplifting that helps us move beyond it?

Maybe the answer is both.

Sometimes music is a mirror, reflecting exactly where we are.

Other times, it becomes a bridge, helping us cross into a different state of mind.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that music doesn’t necessarily transform us into someone new. Instead, it helps us access different parts of ourselves. The reflective part. The joyful part. The creative part. The courageous part.

Like waves, our moods are constantly changing. We are not meant to stay in one emotional state forever. We move between calm waters and storms, between stillness and movement, between reflection and action.

Music often becomes the current that helps us navigate those shifts.

Maybe that’s why my playlists make no sense on paper. Colombian vallenato, cumbia, country, classical piano, gospel, meditation music, disco, romantic ballads, and everything in between.

To some people, it may look like a random collection.

To me, it’s a map.

Each style represents a different current, a different feeling, a different version of myself.

And perhaps the goal isn’t to find one type of music that defines us.

Perhaps the goal is to recognize that every note, every rhythm, every season of sound is part of the same symphony.

Just like every wave is part of the same ocean.

Maybe Wave 40 is about realizing that music isn’t just something we listen to. It’s something we travel through. Sometimes it reflects where we are. Sometimes it helps carry us somewhere new. And sometimes the right song doesn’t change who we are—it simply helps us find our way back to ourselves.

Wave 39: When You Stop Becoming and Start Returning
There are moments when life doesn’t feel like something you’re doing…
but something you’re remembering.

This weekend, I stepped into a painting class, and something in me softened immediately…

Not because everything was perfect, but because I wasn’t performing anything. I was just creating.

It started with charcoal on fabric. No pressure. No expectation. Just a line becoming form. Then paint layering slowly, almost like something inside me was finding its way out through my hands.

Hours passed. Four to six, maybe more if time mattered. But it didn’t.

There was no role to hold. No list to manage. No noise asking for attention. Just presence. Just breath. Just color meeting surface.

And I noticed something simple but powerful:

When a person is fully inside their creation, they return to themselves.

Not the version shaped by responsibility or routine. But the one that existed before all of that. The one that still knows how to play, explore, and begin again without fear.

When I finished, I didn’t want to put the jacket away. I brought it home and placed it where I could see it immediately. Not hidden. Not stored. Visible.

Like a reminder.

Not just of what I made, but of what happens when I stop leaving myself behind.

And maybe that’s what creativity really is — not the final object, but the moment we come back into ourselves without resistance.

For me, it started in a painting class.

Something simple. A jacket. Charcoal. Paint. Fabric slowly turning into form under my hands. No pressure to perform. No expectation to be anything other than present.

And somewhere in those hours, something softened.

When you finally stop resisting your call, something quiet begins to surface. Not as a thought, but as a feeling in the body. A release. Like letting go of a fight you didn’t fully realize you were in.

The fight is not always visible. Sometimes it is the effort to become someone else. To fit into what life, society, or expectation seems to define as success, enough, or worthy. To keep up. To prove. To adjust yourself until you disappear a little in the process.

But underneath all of that, there is a current.

And it does not come from pressure. It does not come from recognition. It moves from somewhere deeper. From the heart. From the place inside you that was never asking to be more—only asking to be true.

In that painting class, time stopped mattering. Four, maybe six hours. No roles to hold. No noise to answer. Just breath, color, movement, and something returning.

And I realized something simple:

When you stop resisting your own current, you don’t lose direction—you find peace.

Peace is not something you chase. It appears when the internal war quiets.

And purpose begins to shift too. It is no longer shaped by money, recognition, or external validation. It becomes something far more intimate.

The purpose of being you. For you.

Not as performance. Not as proof. Not as something to earn.

Maybe Wave 39 is about stopping the fight to become what society expects you to be, or what you think you should be… and allowing yourself to become who you were meant to be.

As an alignment.

And in that alignment, life stops feeling like resistance.

It starts feeling like return.

Not to who you should be…
but to who you already are.

Wave 38: When Life Give You Back to Yourself
Life is like the ocean—always moving, always changing.

Waves come and go, currents shift, and before we realize it, we find ourselves in a different place than where we started.

I felt it after a simple moment at the pool.

That moment…

The realization that I am no longer the center of my daughter’s world.

I am still her support system, her home, her refuge, her safe place, and her unconditional love.

But I am no longer her center.

At first, it felt like a heavy wave, then something unexpected happened.

Instead of feeling empty, I felt space.

Not emptiness.

Space.

Space that had been waiting for me all along.

Almost overnight, life started opening little windows.

A Pilates class, yoga at the beach, a group of women gathering to walk, move, meditate, laugh, and grow.

Nothing extraordinary.

Yet everything felt different. Not because the opportunities were new.

Because I was.

Life has a strange way of moving us when it’s time.

Sometimes it’s a soft wave that whispers.

Sometimes it’s a strong one that pushes.

And sometimes it’s an internal current—quiet and unseen—pulling us inward or carrying us somewhere we didn’t yet know we needed to go.

I’ve felt that push before.

Years ago, when I moved to this country, I had to learn how to stand on my own two feet.

What felt uncomfortable at the time became one of the greatest gifts of my life.

Now life is speaking again.

Through my daughter.

“You don’t have to do everything with me.”

Uff.

That one stayed with me.

Not because it hurt.

Because it was true.

When they grow, they start becoming who they are meant to be.

And as they grow, we begin to remember who we were meant to be too—slowly redirecting our boat toward that dream port we once set aside.

Growth is not becoming someone new.

It is remembering who we were before the world asked us to be everything for everyone else.

None of this was here two weeks ago.

Or perhaps it was.

The opportunities were already outside my window—quiet, patient—waiting for me to open it and let them in.

A soft current I hadn’t noticed before.

Now carrying me toward places I was always meant to arrive.

Maybe Wave 38 isn’t about no longer being the center of someone else’s world.

Maybe it’s about realizing we can finally become the center of our own.

Wave 37: The Day I Stopped Being the Center
I didn’t realize Wave 36 was the beginning of something… not just a day off, but a shift in who I am becoming.

Last week, I asked my daughter to go to the pool with me.

It was the last day of school. I thought it would be simple—just the two of us, a quiet way to decompress and mark the end of a season.

She agreed… until we got home.

Then came the delays.

“I’m coming.”
“Just a minute.”
“Wait.”

But she never really came.

At some point, I got frustrated and said, “Fine. If you don’t want to spend time with me, I’ll go by myself.”

So I did.

And she followed later.

That’s when she said something that stayed with me.

“You don’t have to do everything with me.”

It shook me more than I expected.

Because the truth is… I still want to do everything with her.

For years, she has been the center of my world.

But something quietly shifted.

She is growing, and I am no longer the center of her life.
I am becoming something else—the place she returns to, not the place she revolves around.

That realization hurt… but it also opened something in me.

If she is learning to step into her own life…

Then maybe I am finally being invited back into mine.

Not only as a mother.

But as me.

A woman who also needs space.
Who also needs joy.
Who also needs her own moments again.

So I signed up for Pilates.
I went to yoga at the beach.
I said yes to painting classes.
I started choosing things that are just mine.

And something unexpected happened.

She noticed.

She felt it.

And quietly she asked me, “Can we still be besties?”

I smiled and said, “Yes. Always.”

Then I told her the truth:

“I love you. And I’m also learning to take care of myself.”

Because love doesn’t disappear when roles shift.

It just changes shape.

And maybe that’s what growing together really is.

Not holding tighter…

But learning how to stay connected while we both expand.

The moment I stopped being the center of her world, I realized I had never fully been the center of my own.

Maybe Wave 37 is about this: love doesn’t shrink when roles change—it expands.

And sometimes, when someone you love grows away from you… it isn’t loss.
It’s life gently pulling you back to yourself.

Have you ever realized someone you love is growing away from you… and discovered it was actually life inviting you back to yourself?
