A doorbell rings.
By the time someone opens the door, the kids are already running away, laughing around the corner.
“Ding dong ditch.”
“Knock and run.”
Whatever name you grew up calling it, chances are you’ve heard of it… and many of us probably did it at least once.
Was it annoying? Absolutely.
Was it harmless? Most of the time, yes.
Lately I’ve found myself wondering something much deeper than the prank itself.
When did our first reaction become outrage instead of perspective?
Somewhere along the way, we seem to have lost the ability to separate a childish moment from a serious offense. Every inconvenience feels like it needs to become a report, a complaint, an argument, or proof that something is wrong with the next generation.
Of course children need guidance. Respect matters. They should learn when they’ve crossed a line.
But they also need room to be children.
To laugh.
To be silly.
To make harmless mistakes.
To learn without every misstep becoming a permanent label.
Sometimes I wonder…
Would we rather see our kids outside creating memories with their friends, or sitting silently inside, glued to a screen, disconnected from the world around them?
Maybe the real question isn’t whether children have changed.
Maybe it’s whether we’ve forgotten what it felt like to be one.
Perhaps growing older shouldn’t mean losing our patience with childhood.
Maybe it should remind us to offer the same grace we once hoped adults would give us.
Have you ever looked at a child and remembered doing something almost exactly the same… or have we simply forgotten the kid we used to be?
